Why hire a postpartum doula?

Unconditional support is just as important in the first few weeks of the postpartum period as it is during labor. A Postpartum doula can be invaluable to assist with the adjustment to the new addition to your family. As written in DONA’s Postpartum Doula Position Paper, “For new parents the challenges are numerous recovery from birth; total responsibility for a tiny dependent newborn; sleeplessness; emotional adjustment; mastery of infant feeding and care; understanding of and adjustment to the unique personality of their baby; and household organization. Sometimes the physical or emotional health of the new mother or baby is compromised, and the parents need more support at home than they had expected.”

As your postpartum doula, my role is to assist with small chores around the house, provide hands-on education, assist with older children, and offer a listening ear and unconditional support. I will not take over care of the baby, nor do I perform any clinical tasks or offer medical advice. My ultimate goal is to give enough guidance to create the best beginning a new family can have.
